On Procrastination II

Last time I admitted to my horrible tendency to procrastinate. One of the interesting things about procrastinators is that they tend to hate the fact that they procrastinate even if they’ve accepted that procrastination is “just how they work.” Having been a procrastinator for as long as I can remember you needn’t worry, I’m one of you. I always did my best work the night before. Still, after I’d handed in my work or given that presentation I always knew that I could have done better. A little tweak here, a little more preparation there. While procrastination drove my success, … Continue reading

Preparation Procrastination

If you have ever been a teacher or spoken in church, you realize the importance of preparation. Ideally this should happen several days before your lesson, or at least the day before. Here are the top ten signs that you may be suffering from a severe case of preparation procrastination. 10) You ask your children to be quiet and have your spouse drive to church as look over your notes to pull everything together. You took the notes that morning while eating breakfast. 9) You spend your time in Sacrament meeting coloring and cutting out the handouts for this week’s … Continue reading

Putting Things Off Could Be Costing You Money

You know the saying that time is money? Well, here is another way to apply that old bit of advice. Putting things off and not doing them in time can cost you money. Here are just a few examples. Not paying bills on time can lead to all sorts of late fees. Pay credits cards late, and it could lead to an increase in your interest rate! Ouch. Putting off winter preparation in your home can mean higher energy bills. Not caulking and insulating will raise the amount of heating that you will need to provide, and that costs money. … Continue reading

LDS Week in Review – March 3rd-8th

Welcome to our Week in Review, where we summarize the week’s blogs and help keep you on top of all the latest doings here in LDS. We started the week with a look at “Preach My Gospel,” a learning aid that is given to missionaries entering the field, and that we as members also have access to. We can be missionaries wherever we are, and this piece of curriculum can help prepare us for that. Miriam spoke of the power the Gospel has to help us make and keep friendships throughout our lives, and also of the March 2008 Sharing … Continue reading

Two Last-Minute Shoppers and One Who does it Early

I wrote early in on in the holiday season about the way most families have various individuals with different “holiday” temperaments to contend with. Some individuals really get into the hustle and bustle of the season, while others prefer a more low key approach. As we are only five days away from the “big day” here, I am watching as my teenagers’ personalities and temperaments are unfolding. Now that they are old enough to be less influenced by my schedule, I see their own internal ways starting to evolve. I am noticing that this year we have two last-minute shoppers … Continue reading

How Prepared is Well-Prepared (and When is it Too Much?)

John F. Kennedy said “The time to repair the roof is when the sun is shining”—a quaint colloquial way of touting the benefits of preparation. When it comes to our home businesses, few would argue that preparation is not a good thing—but how prepared should we be and when does it cross over into being a waste of valuable time? Personally, I do have a line that once I cross it, my preparation becomes manic and obsessive OR I use “preparation” as a way of avoiding the work that I need to be doing today (how can it be procrastination … Continue reading
